What is the difference between a major difference and a minor difference?

In the translation that I'm working on, Translation Finder has retrieved several matches. Two of those matches each have a single character that is different from the source text. One match has a minor character (gray background) difference, while the other has a major character (reddish background) difference. As a result, the match percentages are different. What is the difference between a major difference and a minor difference?

  Major differences will typically be for complete words, medium for stop words and low for separators, tags, whitespaces...

  Why are circled numbers (symbols) considered a major difference?
