Merge/update segments' comments/custom fields when importing TMX or Excel into TM?
Hello,
When we import an Excel or TMX file into a Translation Memory, we can select “Merge new and existing data – Replace existing translations”.
However, while this option allows to update the translations to match the latest import – including previously existing segments/translations – it does not update a segment’s other fields, such as comments, label or any custom field(s).
Is there an option to also “merge and update” a segment’s Comments + any custom fields during an Excel or TMX* import into a TM or glossary?
(*TMX import would be able to update only the Wordbee custom fields for segments but not the comments, unlike Excel, – as I can see when we export TMX files from Wordbee it includes all the segment custom fields but not segment comments)
Thanks in advance!

Hi Aurelie,
Thank you for this tricky question ;-)
The "merge and update" option merges (a) texts and (b) custom fields which are attached to a language. On the other hand, custom fields attached to the segment itself (and not a specific language) are not merged. Labels are not language specific and thus not merged. Comments, yes, could be merged and we indeed do not do this today.
When you import an Excel into a TM, you can choose to import segment level custom fields. And from my previous paragraph it is true that they will not be merged. Ok, this is not useful in your case.
There are workarounds to import an Excel with language specific custom fields (you would upload the file to a project with a corresponding multilingual Excel configuration). Then you merge the project memory into the TM. This works but requires some extra steps to configure.
If we would merge all the fields, how would you see it?
- Labels: Would the imported labels replace the existing ones?
- Comments: What if some comments are confidential and shall not be accessible to other people? In the translation finder, anyone may see those merged comments.
- Segment level custom fields: Would these replace the existing ones?Kind regards,
Stephan
